| Course Description:
Students develop an understanding of music by acquiring and developing
skills on a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument. A wide variety of
band repetoire is played along with technical studies for the development
of playing skills. Personal musical excellence is emphasized. Students
also have the chance to explore music from a listening perspective and
develop skills enabling them to create music. Our excellent music lab allows
students to write music with the same software as professionals. All students
participate in a co-curricular ensemble as part of course requirements. |
| Prerequisite: At least
one year of study on instrument recommended. Preparatory Band also offered
for students with no music background. |

WOBURN WIND ENSEMBLE
The Woburn Wind Ensemble
has for many years achieved national recognition, attaining Gold standing
multiple years in the MusicFest bands competition. In 2002 members traveled
to Montreal, Quebec to perform in different venues, and attended a clinic
at McGill University. Other recent destinations have included Boston, Mass.,
and Orlando, Florida, where they performed at Epcot Centre.
Led by Head of Music Laura
Houghton, members of the band include students in the grade 10-OAC music
program and other selected individuals by audition. Competition pieces
for this year include Pictures at an Exhibition (Mussorgsky) and
20th century works Trittico (Nelhybel) and Invictus (Balmages). |
CONCERT BAND

SMALL ENSEMBLES
On many occasions, our talented
musicians are asked to participate in school, Board, or community functions
or productions. Nine instrumentalists formed the chamber group which supplied
music to Woburn Drama's 2002 production of California Suite, performing
an original score by student Matthew Cheung, who also rehearsed and conducted
the performers. |
