Catch Those Social Butterflies!

From malicious bus drivers to duet love songs on Adam’s piano, the music council social was a day to be remembered. On Tuesday, December 16 the Music Council headed over to President Adam McLeod’s house where the annual Christmas social was held.

It started as any other day at Woburn, well, any other delayed start scheduled day. Everyone had a smile on their face, but the council had even more to look forward to than just shortened periods. By 3:30 pm, the music room was filled with anxious students, with their food and presents. Excitement and giddy laughter filled the air, especially when Stella Woo refused to take my food with everyone else’s, because I had brought it in the only bag I could find that would fit the container. The bag had the largest “La Senza” marking I had ever seen and eventually Mr. Farrow grudging brought it over in his van. Many of the council would have preferred I take the bag with me on the bus.

Once the vans had departed, the remaining 6 council members went to the bus stop to catch anything stopping at Midland and Ellesmere. Jesse, Nathan, Patrick, Tiffany, Stephanie and I waited for the bus with fellow music student Enoch. Once the bus stopped, we all entered but the driver was not the most pleasant of all the Toronto Transit Commission had to offer. He immediately asked for full fare if we were not carrying student cards, of the type I had forgotten to bring. Enoch did not carry his as well but instead of paying full fare, he watched past the driver to Patrick to ask him something. The driver suddenly got even angrier than before and kicked Enoch off the bus. We all paid whatever nominal fare he was charging and considered ourselves lucky.

When we arrived, he found that everyone had arrived and busied themselves with different tasks, such as sorting food, playing euchre, chess, clue, and Star Wars Monopoly. By far, euchre was the most played, Mr. Farrow even sat in on a hand, called something on a limb, and made the point. Mr. Farrow had to leave to entertain guests at his home, but euchre games continued and Mrs. Houghton taught those who were interested in taking up the game.

When food was served, the sushi and turkey were first to be attacked. The hungry council members, limited as they were due to the loss of Omar, who was watching the 9 hour Lord of The Rings fest, Rahul, who was terribly sick, and Ivan, who couldn’t attend, sitting made quick work of the dishes. There was just too much for all of us to finish, and so many leftovers were the result. Then came the desserts, which engulfed the entire dining room table, which were also too much for the council to finish themselves.

After dinner, things picked up, with the N64 football tournament downstairs and the T.V. commentary for whatever happened to be showing upstairs. Before the highly anticipated secret Santa could happen, Mrs. Houghton had to leave to continue her role as a mother.

Once the confusion of unmarked gifts, and others who were not present was sorted out, secret Santa was successful and everyone received something interesting. Nishani received a notable gift, consisting of wrapped instructions that lead her around the house and eventually to a gift certificate.

After all the secret Santa excitement, the evening rolled slowly forward, starting with TV upstairs and some putting practice in the basement that lead to Adam’s exclamation of, “Please don’t break my house.” That was later followed up by Adam impressions by Jacky.

At about 8:30, council members began leaving and the evening was coming to a close. Either because he was bored, lonely, or just plain giddy, Nathan began composing love songs for Eva and singing along with them shortly after Jesse played his famous composition from the Remembrance Day assembly. Nathan was soon joined by Jacky, who had run out of material for his Adam impressions and they sang love song duets of Nathan’s random compositions to Eva.

After most of the council had left, the rest of us gathered upstairs where Muchmoremusic had a top 20 hottest women in music special going. There were few women in that list that slipped through our arms without getting a good 5 minutes of criticism.

At 10:00, the last council member left and the social had come to a close. Another excellent year gone by.
