2005 Executive elected
May 24, 2005 06:25 PM

Christopher Langan, president-elect, will take the helm of the Council next year with Jesse Jang, incumbent Events Coordinator, as his vice-president. The elections for next year's Council Executive were held on Tuesday 24th May but results were withheld until the Banquet upon the request of this year's Executive.

Louis Varahidis will replace graduate Stella Woo as Secretary. Eva Chan has been promoted to Treasurer after serving a year as junior to graduate Andrew Rosselet. Omar Syed has been appointed Assistant Treasurer. James Rosselet was elected to a new portfolio replacing Events; as Events and Media Coordinator, he will have specific responsibility for WoburnMusic.com and promotional materials.

Chris Langan, an OELC graduate like all recent Council presidents, will begin his fourth year on Council this fall. First elected as Grade 9 Representative in 2002, he served as Secretary and Vice-President respectively in the two succeeding years. He has a reputation for orderliness; the order "Langanize the room" is often given in order to effect a thorough clean-up. Chris has played the bass clarinet throughout his years at WM. Jesse Jang, an accomplished pianist and veteran Council member since grade 9, has served most recently as the last Events Coordinator and put together much of the excellent end-of-year video screened at the Banquet.

Longterm observers noted that ever since Council became a wholly elected body in 2000, while there have been two females and more frequently a male and a female taking the two top positions, this is the first time that two males are filling the presidency and the vice-presidency. It is also notable that all elections were carried out without the need for a second ballot for any position, another situation that has never occurred.

Council Executives wield considerable power in determining the group's agenda and taking control of projects. They work closely with teachers to aid in the operations of the Department and are often called upon to accomplish difficult tasks - even plan concerts - on a moment's notice.

To be voted to the Executive, a member of Council must serve for at least one year. He or she is elected by the Council for one term. (There was one two-term president six years ago.) Due to the nature of their work and the position of trust they hold, both Treasurers are appointed by the Council Advisor.

The new members of the Executive were sworn in at the Banquet. By tradition, both incoming and outgoing Executives share power and responsibilities for the month of June. Elections for Council Representatives will take place in late September of the new term.
