Fond farewells and new beginnings at the Banquet
May 26, 2007 01:15 AM

WM's annual celebration of the end of the year highlighted the many successes of the past months, bade farewell to the graduating class, and didn't fail to roast both students and staff for the many stupid things done since the last Banquet.

THE 'PROBLEM' PAYS OFF: Onion Award winner Evan Akriotis '07 accepts his prize from outgoing Council President Eva Chan '07 and VP Louis Varahidis '07, who chaired many of the evening's events.

The evening began, as the crowd arrived, with live music from alumnus Justin Chow '03, who provided entertainment throughout the evening. An unprecedented number of other alumni were also in attendance.

After dinner, outgoing Council President Eva Chan offered words of thanks to her executive and some advice to the incoming members. The new executive members were announced and 'pinned' with their Council service pins, and outgoing members of Council and Exec were thanked for their ongoing hard work.

In his first speech, President-elect Tim Mark offered assurance that the new council would be able to live up to its predecessors. Music head Laura Houghton expressed gratitude to the Council, who she said make what is "more than a two-person job" much more manageable.

The bittersweet moments came as those who would be leaving WM at the end of the year were recognized. The over thirty graduates of 2007 were thanked for their loyalty and presented with the traditional graduation gift. The gathering applauded choral tutor Willis Bote and student teacher Amanda Ironside, both moving on to new ventures, for their considerable contributions to the program. Long-time tutor Matthew Cheung urged next year's students to remember and to continue the traditions of Woburn Music.

Of course there were the Jeanie Awards, many of them memorable (now we know which word gets Louis as red as a beet) and the Onion, awarded by audience vote to the person most deserving of high satirical 'honour'. This year's winner, Evan Akriotis, won for his... problem.
