Remembrance (formerly Armistice) Day commemorates Canadians who died in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. It was first held on November 11 in 1919. Later, it was moved to the first Monday of the week containing the 11th. It returned to a fixed date in 1931.
The date commemorates the signing of the Armistice which ended the First World War.
