Like a flood, the entire student body of Woburn charged into the auditorium, each person gradually finding their own place, while the Music Council was extremely excited. As a member sitting in the front row, watching the whole school rush towards me was a considerable cause for alarm yet it all happened in the space of a few seconds, giving me enough time to calm down. Once each person sat down you could see by the look on their face that they were excited. Everybody was avidly awaiting the oncoming performances, I know I was.
Throughout the practice preceding the assembly the performers seemed nervous and hesitant; they were about to perform in front of a thousand people after all, but then the practice was over, and it was time. The students were settled, the stage was set and William Lu was giving his usual awe-inspiring speech, while at the same time burning the Music Council with a scathing comment. But we all know that whatever he said could never overcome the lack of Kleenex in our classrooms. After each introduction given by William Lu the dancers and musicians came on stage accordingly and whatever unease they experienced beforehand evaporated instantly. They danced their hearts out and sang their lungs out.
Each dance group had a completely original and creative routine. Each dancer had a uniquely passionate expression on their face. Each kick, flip and hand twirl got a thundering round of applause. This was what they got from months of fervent practice and months of arduous training, the cheers of hundreds. With lots of encouragement from the crowd they managed to pull off an excellent show and no less could be said about the musical performances.
Chamber choir was spectacular. The audience was hanging on every word of Silver Bells, feeling the holiday spirit. Senior Jazz also wowed them with their music. They had a passion for every note and every bar, it was a rush.
As the holidays drew nearer Woburn was getting restless. They were already starting to leave as fast as they had come! But after the dances, the songs and the speeches came time for “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” the end of the assembly and the beginning of winter break. Of course the Music Council held the signs imprinted with the lyrics and of course everybody sang along with Chamber Choir. A few notable members of the council could be heard above the singing of both Chamber Choir and the people, their enthusiasm unparalleled. And when the song was done everybody cheered! School was over and Christmas was just around the corner! What a rush!
