A holiday message

A merry Christmas and happy holidays to you all.

This is a season to which many people look forward each year. While for Christians this is a time of great expectation and fulfilment, for all of us it is a time of return, in an increasingly complex world, to family and friends, to cherished institutions and traditions that are both a source and reason for celebration.

I have often mentioned how much it seems as if we are a global, extended family. We know how much this institution benefits us. We learn to pursue shared goals by working together and showing enthusiasm for the things that bring us together. It is at this time of celebration in particular where we reflect on all it has given us.

But like any other family that sends young people out into the world, we also have a great responsibility to reflect ideals that have the best interests of all in mind. While these may not be times as troubled by war or hardship as those of our grandparents, that they may never be so will be dependent on efforts from all of us. If we take, as we do, what we have learned in this proving ground - the spirit of volunteerism, of friendship, of sincere effort - and apply ourselves in the same way wherever life may take us, I am sure we will continue to approach that goal.

My best wishes for Christmas to each of you and to your families.
