January 26, 2008 04:13 PM

Shocking news hit Canadians and jazz fans all over the world: Oscar Peterson, 82, died last December 23, 2007 due to kidney failure. He was one of the most talented jazz pianists ever, and won numerous awards in his lifetime. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award and an International Jazz Hall of Fame Award in 1997. He was also recognized as a Companion of the Order of Canada, which is the highest civilian honour.

A tribute for the late Oscar Peterson happened last January 12, 2008 at Roy Thomson Hall. Fans were gathered not to just honour Peterson as a jazz musician but as an admirable and supportive person who helped persuade the City of Mississauga to put a traffic light near a school. The residents of Mississauga want to say goodbye to him as well, and will do that by hosting a tribute concert being held at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre on February 14th. This concert will feature Molly Johnson, Sophie Milman, Oliver Jones and other great musicians.
