A Little Rock and Roll in Woburn's Week
April 19, 2008 03:57 PM

It was an exciting week for all music students from Monday the 7th to Friday the 11th. With performances from the talented singing group, Rajaton, and also from our own Jazz Band, our calendars were definitely overflowing. In the centre of such exciting events was our highly anticipated and long awaited trip to watch We Will Rock You, a musical based on some of the band, Queen’s, many hit songs. The performance was at the Canon Theatre downtown.

Around fifty students boarded a bus, all thrilled to get away from the work of school for a day of entertainment. Upon entering the Canon Theatre and, eventually, taking our seats for the show, it was evident that everyone knew we were in for something spectacular.
We were not disappointed. With bright lights and smoke, the musical began. It was an excellent show, definitely one to remember by all who attended.

The plot followed young Galileo, a destined rock and roll king in a future where instruments and non-computerized sounds are forbidden. Soon, he encounters Scaramouche, his love interest and ally, who, ultimately, helps him discover a guitar hidden by past rock rebels, Queen. Amidst all of the excitement are the ‘Bohemians’ who are fellow fighters against the Killer Queen and her anti-music supporters. Several of Queen’s extensive list of hit songs helped form the plot and explain it, as well.

Songs such as ‘I Want To Break Free’ and ‘We Are The Champions’ were sung and performed by the incredible musical talents both onstage and in the orchestra. In addition to extraordinary musical notes, realistic sets and artistry constructed the scenes that made the story seem more visually intriguing.

All in all, everything about the show was excellent. From the vocal talents to the orchestra, to the set design and lighting, everyone was kept entertained. We were laughing and singing along throughout the whole show, so make sure to go out and see it for yourself if you haven’t yet! It continues to May 11th, so hurry to get tickets.

In additional news, all who have seen it will be pleased to hear that We Will Rock You’s show writer-director, Ben Elton, did an interview for the Star not too long ago. He stated that a sequel to the hit musical is underway and is likely to begin in Toronto, due to continuous sold out shows in London. It is likely that the sequel will feature even more of Queen’s hit songs. What will this mean for our rock hero, Galileo? I guess we’ll all just have to wait to find out.
