Council Retreats for a day

On September 26th, the newly assembled Music Council of Woburn met for their first real meeting at the Houghton residence. In the morning, the students enjoyed an energizing breakfast provided by Mrs. Houghton. They were all a bit shy at first, but after a few trust-building games, the students warmed up to each other. The older, more experienced members were secretly chosen to play a role as a “bad” member. At the start of the meeting, these members started acting up, displaying inequality, disdain, aggressiveness, and overall disrespect. Afterwards, new members were quite relieved to hear that it was just a lesson on good behaviour, but they learned a lot from this dramatic experience.

By lunchtime, the students were all acquainted with other, especially after having enjoyed a multi-cultural potluck. Everyone chatted about recipes and music, until the next set of trust games began. For one of the trust games, the group was divided into two; half were blind-folded, and half weren’t allowed to speak. People from both groups were partnered up and worked together to make their way through a path of obstacles in the backyard.

The music council retreat was an amazing day. The council made good progress regarding important decisions of the year (i.e. fundraising, goals, and council responsibilities) and the trust-building games broke the ice for many of the members. At the end of the day, everyone left eager to begin their year as Woburn Music Council members.
