On November 4, Madrigal Choir was very fortunate to have a vocal workshop with Dr. Gerard Yun, who came to Woburn to help polish a few music pieces and tell funny stories to relate to. It all started off with Dr. Yun introducing himself. Afterwards, he led the stretches and warm-up in a very interesting way. The choir was able to learn a few new warm-ups. Singing, “Mina mina mina mina mou,” while either tapping the round bone on our wrist with two fingers or brushing your arm up and down with the back and front of your hand showed the difference between singing choppily and singing smoothly.

After our warm-ups, Dr. Yun helped Madrigal Choir with “The Journey Home”. The first time it was sung, he told us to put more movement, more emphasis on some of the words. This would put more feeling into what was sung instead of being boring. He showed that we should crescendo and decrescendo on parts or words we think are important in this piece.

This also helped with singing “Flanders Fields”. Teaching him how Madrigal Choir sings it, he led the tenors into either speeding up or slowing down to see if the basses, altos, and sopranos were listening carefully. He explained how the tenors are the heartbeat of the song and how the rest of the choir should always listen to their singing speed. Thanks to Dr. Yun, Madrigal Choir will sing to the fullest of their abilities with polished pieces during the Remembrance Day Assembly and also move the audience with the words which will be sung.
