The Woburn Senior Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Farrow, was off to York University early Wednesday morning to participate in the annual Jazz Festival that takes place there.
After preparing for their performance in the warm-up room, the band anxiously made their way down to the recital hall where they would be performing their pieces. The band started off with a favourite funk tune called ‘The Chicken’, which featured Evan Porter and Mitchell Vanderhoeden soloing on the tenor saxophone and a guitar solo by Jeet Adhvaryu. This was followed by a Gershwin ballad entitled ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’, which featured a stunning trombone solo played by Jacob Plachta. To finish off, the jazz band ended with a Duke Ellington tune called ‘Feet Bone’ which included a piano solo by Lauren Davis, prompting their one-member audience to erupt into applause. All three pieces were extremely challenging in both technique and style, but the band managed to impressively and convincingly pull them off. Adjudicating their performance were two experts in the jazz music field.
After their wonderful performance, the band went directly into a clinic with one of the adjudicators, Mike Cado, a jazz guitarist. The clinic was extremely informative and enjoyable as the band received some great advice on how to improve their overall performance.
The band went home feeling satisfied and pleased with the work they had done after receiving a Gold standing for their performance. Way to go Jazz Band and Mr. Farrow!!
Congratulations to Woburn's other bands in recent festivals as well!
