An inspiration to many of the young musicians at Woburn C.I., Mitchell Vanderhoeden is undoubtedly a star worth recognizing.

Mitchell first began his musical journey eight years ago in the summer before 5th grade, when he took a summer of private saxophone lessons in anticipation of the coming school year. While at Churchill Heights P.S., he became heavily involved in the music program, playing the saxophone in the Senior Band and Jazz Band. Through his years at Woburn C.I, his musical skill and involvement have increased exponentially.

Mitchell identifies himself as “a gifted saxophonist, a decent pianist and a bad drummer.” Humour aside, no one can deny his talent as a musician. A constant fixture in the music hall, Mitchell is an amazing musician idolized by many. Within Woburn Music, he is involved in a number of high-level ensembles, namely the Senior Jazz Band, and Wind Ensemble, and was even involved in Concert Choir for a year. In addition to playing three types of saxophone – the Soprano, Alto and Tenor, Mitchell has also taken private piano lessons.

Mitchell also assumes a leadership position within Woburn Music. He acted as the principle of the saxophone section in the Wind Ensemble this past year, sharing his expertise with those in his section. In addition, Mitchell is also a member of the Music Council and is the teaching assistant for the Grade 9 Instrumental Music class.

A constant presence in the music hall, Mitchell spends much of his time in rehearsals in room 100. Claiming that the music room is his second home, he even opts to spend his spares chatting with Mr. Farrow in the music office. In fact, Mitchell claims that he loves Woburn Music so much he’s even postponing his university education to spend one more year with his music family!
